British actress and ardent women's rights activist Emma Watson believes that it is not only the responsibility of women to fight for their equality, but that men also have a special duty to fulfil when it comes to combating gender bias. Watson's deep regard for the feminine plight in a world of gender inequality led the young performer to start actively campaigning against discrimination.
The 24-year old thespian, who is also a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, does not just sign petitions and proclaim that she is a feminist; she puts a lot of hard work into changing the way in which a large part of the world views the social stature of females. Watson is actively using her public skills for a great cause by being the main speaker at several campaigns and conferences. The actress is one of the key people of the solidarity movement for gender equality called HeforShe, along with the Hollywood hero Kiefer Sutherland and CNN's Wolf Blitzer. Emma Watson eloquently and passionately addresses issues like wage gaps and violence against women, and has recently started inviting men to pledge their allegiance to the campaign.
A new campaign was launched in January 2015 by Emma Watson and HeforShe, with the aim of getting commitment from companies, universities and governments across the globe to improve gender equality. According to HeforShe and Watson, it is not up to women only, it is the duty of all human beings to make a change. In her opening address she implored men to support women wherever their ambitions lie, and to speak out on behalf of women where gender bias is happening.
Emma Watson said that her breath was taken away when a fan told her that she was inspired to stop her father from beating her up after listening to one of Watson's speeches. The recent HeforShe conference video has achieved over ten million views and started more than a billion conversations on various social media streams. The campaign has also received support from influential figures like Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Hillary Clinton and Prince Harry.
